Abstract

A method of constructing a floor, bridge deck or the like comprises the steps of supporting spaced high tensile steel joists 10 (Fig. 1) each having a lower horizontal edge flange 11 extending from each side of a vertical web, laying edge-abutting pre-cast concrete slabs 13 transversely between each pair of adjacent joists 10 with their ends resting upon the flanges 11 and providing a covering of concrete, asbestos cement or equivalent material 24 (Fig. 3) over at least the lower exposed region of each flange of the joists 10. In one form (Figs. 1 and 3) the flanges 11 are preferably not covered until all or substantially all of the dead load on the structure has been applied. Each slab 13 has recessed ribs 14 facing and adjacent the edge of each flange 11, the space between which ribs 14 is filled to cover the flanges bottom face. Means, such as a suspension bolt hook 22, may be embedded in the underside of some slabs 13, to suspend a staging. Wire mesh 23 secured to suspension member 16 secured in the slabs 13 is embedded in the cement filling 24. In a modification (Fig. 4) the flange covering 24 is applied before slabs 13 are laid by disposing around the flange 11 a series of short length tube sections to form a tube 32, of concrete or asbestos cement for example, disposed to about edge-to-edge and anchored to the flange 11 by a cement grout 36 as shown. The grout 36 is applied to fill the space inside the tube sections 32a through apertures 37, the joist 10 being then inverted to bring the flange 11 to be encased uppermost. The grout 36 may be applied to fill the space through an opening 33 adjacent the joist web 34, the flange 11 being then lowermost on spacing blocks 35. The spaces between the joists 10 are filled so as to overlie them with lightweight concrete 19 (Fig. 1), of which the slabs 13 may be made. The filling 19 has reinforcement 12 and 20 and may have reinforcement 17. The aligned ends of all the joists 10 may be embedded in a common transverse block of full-weight concrete unconnectedly resting on a support pier.
