Abstract

1,043,398. Automatic temperature control systems. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1963 [Oct.19, 1962], No. 40857/63. Heading G3R. A temperature standard apparatus comprises a resistance element 3 formed by an electrically conductive liquid such as water, a thermo-electric Peltier means 6, 7 for withdrawing heat from the element, and a circuit to control the current through the Peltier means in accordance with the temperature of the element. A side view of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 which comprises silver plated copper plates 1, 2 having terminals a, b serving as electrodes separated by insulating material 20. The Peltier element comprises p and n type semi-conductor material 6, 7 to which current is fed by copper conductors 8, 9 supported on a copper base plate 11 through a thin layer of insulating material. When the water 3 freezes to ice the ohmic resistance increases from approximately 10 K# to a few M#, this property being used in a circuit (Fig. 3) wherein 3 is the water resistance connected in an A.C. bridge circuit which switches a transistor 13 and through a transistor amplifier 16-17 controls the current in the Peltier element 19. The soldered cold junction of a thermo couple 4, 5,the output of which serves as a reference to another circuit (not shown) is housed in a bore in the plate 2 which is in thermal contact with the resistance element 3.
