Headings F1M, F1N and F1S In a reciprocating piston compressor or air motor having a plurality e.g. four cylinders 11 Fig. 7 (not shown) extending radially from an axial valve chamber 12 Fig. 1 (not shown) housing four angularly spaced ports 13 and in which is rotatably mounted an axially adjustable tubular cylindrical distributing valve 25 provided in a central portion 26 with a suction port 32 and a delivery port 33 and adapted to be brought into sequential communication with each valve chamber port 13, the outer surface of the valve body 26 is provided with a groove 37 Fig. 8 (not shown) which at or immediately prior to opening of delivery port 33 serves to connect valve chamber port 13 to an annular chamber 38 bounded in part by the drive end of the valve body and the pressure therein acts against the discharge pressure in an annular chamber 35 at the other end of said valve body and the resulting axial displacement of the valve controls the time of opening of the valve ports according to whether the pressure in chamber 35 is below or above that in chamber 38. The valve portion 26 comprises concentric tubes 27, 28 connected by webs 29 and through which the suction port 32 extends whilst the delivery port 33 extends through the outer tube 28 only. An axial extension tube 31 provides air inlet means to said suction port 32. Each of the four valve chamber ports 13 are roughly triangular and have a side 13a parallel to the valve axis, a side 13b normal to the axis and the third side has two portions 13c, 13d of differing slopes which register with portions 32a, 32b of the leading edge of the inlet port 32 and with the leading edge 33a of delivery port 33. Lubricant is admitted to a bore 45 leading to grooves 46, 47 and cooling water admitted through a pipe 40 traverses a jacket 39 surrounding the valve 25 and a space round each cylinder. The pistons 14 are each secured to a cross-head 15 connected together in diametrically opposed pairs by outside member 16 whilst adjacent pistons are connected by members 17 Fig. 2 (not shown) and the cross-heads are reciprocated by two eccentric rings 18 each rotatable within a slide block 19 and having secured thereto a dished disc 20. The latter are secured together at their peripheries by bars 21 and have balancing weights 24.
