Abstract

The invention comprises 3-hydroxy- or C1- 4 alkoxy - 14b - hydroxy - 19 - nor - carda - 1,3, 5(10),20(22) - tetraenolides and 3 - hydroxy-or C1- 4 alkoxy - 19 - nor - carda - 1,3,5(10),14, 20(22)-pentaenolides, and their preparation by dehydration of 3-keto-5b -hydroxy- or 3-keto-D 4 - 19 - nor -10b , 14b - dihydroxy - cardenolide, followed if desired by alkylation. 14b - Hydroxy - and 14,15 - dehydro - derivatives of 3 - C1- 4 alkoxy - 17b - carboxy - or C1- 4 alkoxycarbonyl - estra - 1,3,5(10) - trienes are prepared from the compounds of the invention by oxidation with potassium permanganate, followed if desired by esterification. The compounds of the invention have pharmaceutical activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier.
