A load such as a motor M is fed through a transformer 11 having two secondary windings A, B and a transformer 12 having for forward and reverse rotation two primary windings C, D, each being connected to a bridge rectifier 14 or 15, the D.C. side of these being shunted by a thyristor 16, 17 controlled by a positive or negative signal 26 through a magnetic amplifier 25 and transformer 27a, 28a. A commutating thyristor 19 and capacitors 20, 21 are provided.
