Abstract
1,042,521. Preventing unauthorized use of I.C. engines. O. A. WALLMARK. May 17, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 19654/63. Heading F1B. [Also in Divisions B7 and E2] In a combined ignition switch and steering wheel locking device a lock cylinder 7 connected to a switch 19 moves a locking bolt 5 of engagement with a steering shaft 2 when turned by key 8. The lock cylinder 7 is mounted in a sleeve 10 which has longitudinal ribs engaged for axial sliding movement in housing 4 carried in bracket 3. A curved flange 35 of the lock cylinder 7 moves an abutment 30 which is connected to or is part of bolt 5 and is loaded towards the steering shaft by spring 25. The inclined surface of the abutment causes the key 8 and lock cylinder 7 to move upwardly against spring 12 until the end 33 of key 8 snaps into the position shown in Fig. 2 to retain the bolt 5 in the inoperative position. A pin 14 Fig. 7 (not shown) extending from the lock cylinder into rotor 17 actuates switch 19 which is in the "on" position when the bolt 5 is withdrawn. Further rotation of key 8 causes the switch to move to "start" position and spring 25 causes the switch to return to the "on" position when the key is released. If the switch is moved to a "garage" position intermediate the "on" and "off" positions and the key is removed, the steering is unlocked and the ignition circuit is broken to facilitate manual movement. Locking member 24 is depressed by insertion of a tool through aperture 29a to permit removal of the housing 4 only when a notch in rotor 17 is in alignment with a projection 26 on locking member 24. Unauthorized forcing of the bolt 5 is prevented by a reinforcing arm 37 and also by a spring-loaded locking piston 38 which engages a recess in the rotor body when the latter is in the ignition "on" position. In another embodiment the housing 4 and bracket 3 are formed as a single piece.
