Abstract

In a method of polymerizing iso-olefins, or copolymerizing thereof with C 4-8 dienes, there is used as catalyst one or more vanadium halides alone or the reaction product thereof with a Group VIII metal carbonyl. The isoolefin may be isobutylene and it may be copolymerized with butadiene, isoprene, 2:3-dimethyl butadiene, piperylene, 1:4-pentadiene, vinyl cyclohexane or cyclo-octadiene.ALSO:Iso olefines are polymerized in the presence of a vanadium halide compound and a carbonyl compound of a Group VIII metal. Included under vanadium halide compounds are VOCl3 and organs metallic halides e.g. dicyclopentadienyl vanadium dichloride Ni and Co carbonyls are specified. The catalysts may be supported.
