Abstract
A process for separating loose solid material into a number of fractions according to density measures any two of the quantities weight-rate W, volume-rate V, and bulk density D of the raw feed and thence produces a signal corresponding to the rate of feed of any of the said fractions which is used to control and/or to indicate the operation of the separator. Where weight rate and volume rate are the quantities measured the derived signal is of the form KaV + KbW where Ka and Kb are constants. The signals may be used to indicate and/or record the fractions of a particular density in the feed, to indicate when the feed rate of such fractions reaches a particular rate (e.g. the maximum of the fraction that can be handled), to control the feed rate to the process, to control the operations of the process by varying its capacity to handle a particular fraction, to keep the output of a particular fraction within the capacity of ancillary plant, or to control such ancillary plant. The separator may for example, be a pulsating jig or dense-medium bath. The initial signals may be measured by electric, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or magnetic means and are combined by known electric or pneumatic means. Preferably two signals are derived, one representing a rate of feed of a fraction denser than the average of the raw feed, and one representing that of a fraction less dense than the said average.
