Abstract

The hydroxyl group content of a hydroxylic compound is determined by reacting with excess carboxylic acid anhydride, in the presence of a little concentrated H2SO4 which acts as a catalyst, thereby esterifying all the hydroxyl groups in a rapid exothermic reaction, and measuring the resulting temperature rise. The acid anhydride may be aliphatic, such as acetic, propionic or butyric anhydride. One per cent of H2SO4 based on the anhydride is adequate. The reaction is performed in a Dewar flask and maximum temperature is reached in about 30 seconds. The result is compared with results of similar tests on the same compound of known hydroxyl number to determine that of the test compound. The test is applicable to materials such as alcohols, phenols, polyethers and particularly the routine testing of polyester resin to determine its degree of esterification during production. The compound being tested for hydroxyl content should be free of water, but the test is applicable to measuring the water content of non-hydroxylic materials such as acetic acid, or of hydroxylic materials of known hydroxyl number.
