Abstract

1,042,308. Selective printing. R. G. SWEET, and R. C. CUMMING. March 24, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 12455/65. Heading B6F. [Also in Division H4] Alpha-numeric characters, each formed of ink dots disposed in an 8 x 6 array of elemental areas, are recorded on a semi-cylindrical surface 52, Fig. 5, by a rotating assembly 54 of eight ink jets, in which the ink for each jet issues as droplets from a pressure reservoir 56 vibrated by a magnetostrictive element 64, passes through an electrode 64 where the droplets are given or are not given a charge depending whether a recording it not or is to be made in a particular elemental area, and then passes through a constant electric field established between electrodes 70, 72, whereby charged droplets are deflected and absorbed by a porous cover for electrode 70. Signals to control the eight electrodes 60 are applied simultaneously, each electrode receiving a sequence of six signals so as to cause the build-up of the appropriate configuration for the desired character. The signals are developed by means of matrix circuits, Fig. 7 (not shown), one for each alphanumeric character, in which eight horizontal conductors extending to the electrodes 60 are connected through combinations of diodes to six vertical conductors which are energized in turn. Coincident with the rotation of assembly 54, recording surface 52 is advanced longitudinally so that successive rotations produce successive lines of characters on the surface. More than one assembly of ink jets may be provided with alternate lines of recording produced by alternate assemblies.
