Abstract

Alumina balls are produced by providing activated alumina particles having a loss on ignition of from 8 to 14% by weight, forming balls from a mass of the particles, the particles having a particle size distribution by number of at least 88% less than 45 microns in maximum dimension, 20-35% less than 5 microns in maximum dimension and a median particle size of 8-17 microns, and thereafter heating the balls. The activated alumina particles may be prepared by heating hydrous alumina at a temperature of 500 DEG F. or above in a tower, tunnel or kiln, and may be ball-milled to give the required particle size distribution. The balls may be formed by tumbling in a rotating cylinder-type machine while spraying with a binder liquid.
