Abstract

1,042,033. Bearings. LANDIS TOOL CO. March 16, 1963, No. 10521/63. Heading F2A. A bearing has a number of peripherallyspaced pads 42, Fig. 4 (not shown), a number of axial grooves 45 arranged alternately with the pads 42, the width of the grooves 45 being approximately the same as the width of the pads 42 and the depth of the groove being at least half the width of the pads. The bearing is mounted in a housing 22, Fig. 1 (not shown) which is filled with a lubricant and has a spindle 10 mounted therein. In an embodiment, the spindle 10. Fig. 5 (not shown), is mounted in bearings 11, 12, each of which is supported by axially-adjustable rings 13, 14, the adjustment being by means of a nut 15 and a clamp retainer 16, the latter also holding a seal 17 against the ring 14. The forces exerted on the spindle 10 by a driving belt 19 and by a grinding wheel 32 engaging work W, are compensated by each bearing 11, 12 being provided with a spring-urged shoe 20, Fig. 4 (not shown). In use, pre-cooled lubricant is circulated through the housing 22 and the groove 45 in the bearings 11, 12 by means of a pump, Fig. 7 (not shown), and is returned to a reservoir.
