Abstract
A continuous polymerization process comprises (1) continuously feeding into a reaction zone (a) an alfin catalyst, (b) at least one unsaturated organic monomer, (c) a solvent for the monomer which is also a solvent for the subsequently formed polymer, and (d) a polymer-molecular weight regulator, all in such proportions and rate as to produce a final polymer solution of from 1 to 30% concentration, (2) exposing the reactants to conditions of temperature and pressure in the reaction zone to effect substantially complete polymerization thereof, (3) continuously removing solvent from the reaction zone, (4) thereafter removing solvent from the solution in a solvent removal zone and (5) recovering the polymer. In an example, molecular-sieve dried hexane and butadiene are fed to a first stirred reactor together with an alfin catalyst comprising sodium isopropoxide, sodium allyl and sodium chloride, and as a molecular weight regulator 1,4-dihydrobenzene. The polymerization mixture then passes through similar second and third reactors. The resultant polymer solution, withdrawn from the third reactor, is continuously formed into a temporary emulsion with water in a centrifugal wash pump, the emulsion allowed to separate in a decanter, the aqueous layer containing soluble impurities run to waste and the purified polymer solution treated with hot water and steam under high shear mixing conditions to remove the solvent and to produce a crumbed-polymer in water slurry which is filtered off and dried.
