Abstract

1,041,733. Comparing colours. F. PIRINGER. March 8, 1963 [March 8, 1962], No. 9438/63. Heading G2J. In a method of comparing the colour of a sample, with standard colours, a series of inclined mirrors, 42, Fig. 6 (not shown), or a refracting body having various inclined surfaces such as 49, or 58, Figs.7, 12, (not shown), produce a number of identical images, e.g. 9, of the same small area of the sample, and each is compared with standard colours which differ only very slightly so that the eye can detect slight differences of the sample colour from a desired standard. For example, Fig. 1 (not shown), a square may divided into nine parts having an upper horizontal row A.C. varying from light orange-red to deep orange-red, a middle row d-f varying from light carmine-red to deep carminered and a lower row g-i varying from light purplered to deep purple-red the desired standard being e, carmine-red, and by comparison it can be determined whether the sample is more yellowish or more bluish by conidering vertical rows or more light or more dark by considering horizontal rows. In apparatus as in Fig. 11, a sample at 36 or 36<SP>1</SP> is seen in eyepiece Oc as nine different images either by reflection or refraction by member 42, depending on whether the member is a series of reflecting or refracting sections. These images are compared with standards produced by colour surfaces 32, 33 together with the addition of white light, which are obtained by light from lamp 1 passing through angularly adjustable diaphragms 2-4 calibrated at 15, 17 and 20 respectively, having varying opaque areas 14, 16, 18, 19 thereon, and transparent areas 7-11 in a fixed diaphragm 6 to form beams 22-26 and scale indicating beam 44.
