A web, band, or strand 5 of polyvinyl chloride or other thermoplastic material is cooled after shaping or processing at high temperature by feeding it as by a roller 4 on to a moving conveyer belt 1 at a speed equal to or lower than that of the belt 1, and at intervals disengaging the thermoplastic material from the conveyer belt surface by passing it over stationary transverse strips 6 which exert braking forces on the material. The strips 6 are mounted on a hood 10 through which cooling air is passed by a fan 11.
