Abstract

Veterinary compositions for treating helminthiasis comprise a 2-substituted benzimidazole <FORM:1041350/A5-A6/1> or an acid attition salt thereof, wherein R is phenyl, chlorinated or brominated phenyl, p-amino or p-dimethyl-amino-phenyl, methoxy- or dimethoxyphenyl, alkylphenyl, furyl or thienyl; R1 is hydrogen. C1-4 alkyl or alkenyl, and R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, and an alkalising compound of magnesium e.g. MgO, Mg(OH)2, MgCO3, basic MgCO3, or dibasic Mg phosphate. The preferred benzimidizole derivative is 2-phenylbenzimidazole. The compositions may contain other drugs of veterinary utility and/or mineral salt e.g. phenothiazine cyanacet hydrazide, hexachloroethane, piperazine, 1-diethyl-carbamyl-4-methylpiperazine, CCl4, 3, 31, 5, 51, 6, 61, -hexachloro-2, 21-dihydroxydiphenylmethane, tetrachloroethylene, organic and inorganic arsenical compounds, sodium chloride and ox gall. The compositions may be administered in the form of tablets, slugs, pellets, capsules, aqueous and non-aqueous dispersions or suspensions, and may be incorporated into foodstuffs, together with standard excipients e.g. solvents, inert diluents, fillers, emulsifying, dispersing and disintegrating agents, bacteriostats, bectericides, sporicides, stabilizing, thickening, and colouring agents, preservatives, and adsorbents.
