Abstract

Cartilage preparations for use in healing wounds are obtained by subjecting cartilage to a proteolytic treatment and grinding the cartilage, before or after the proteolytic treatment, in the substantial absence of oxygen or in the presence of an antioxidant to a finely divided state. Preferably, the cartilage is defatted before the grinding step. The cartilage is preferably obtained from animals not over six months old, the most effective source generally being foetal skeletons. The proteolytic treatment can be effected with a proteolytic enzyme such as an acid-pepsin solution. The final product generally has a particle size not exceeding 40 microns. Active woundhealing extracts may be obtained from the cartilage product by treating the latter with aqueous solutions of ammonia, urea or various salts having a pH of 6.5 to 10, preferably in the absence of oxygen or in the presence of an antioxidant. The aqueous extracts may be concentrated in vacuum or spray-dried or freeze-dried. The activity of the prepared cartilage is increased by exposing it to irradiation of wavelength not greater than 4000 , e.g. UV light. A synergistic effect is obtained by admixing the cartilage product with growth hormone or tung oil. The product may be administered in the form of tablets, capsules, suppositories, ointments, salves (based on aqueous gels, for example, of aluminium hydroxide, kaolin, silica, methylcellulose, alginates, gum tragacanth, gelatin, gluten, casein, polyvinyl pyrrolidone or dextran), solutions, aqueous suspensions, oily suspensions, emulsions, sprays or incorporated with surgical gauze. Blood, blood plasma or a plasma substitute, e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidone or dextran, may be used as an extending agent. In one Example (No. 14), pepsin-treated, ground cartilage is held, in powder form, between layers of surgical gauze and held through bandages to an unsutured wound. In another Example (No. 22), the cartilage is put into the form of enterically coated tablets.
