Abstract
1,040,427. Centrifugal pumps. A.B.FLYGTS PUMPAR. Feb. 7, 1964 [Feb. 20, 1963], No. 5299/64. Heading F1C. A submersible pump assembly 14 having a composite centrifugal pump 16 and electric motor 15 is characterized in that with the assembly in its operating position the axis of the assembly is substantially horizontal thereby causing a central inlet 3<SP>1</SP> in one end of the assembly to lie at such a level that, with the liquid in its lowest level necessary for the pump to operate, the motor casing will be surrounded by the liquid to a considerable extent. This arrangement provides cooling of the motor when the liquid level is low. The pump assembly 14 when lowered into a tank or pit by a cable 18 is guided by claws 19 hooked around two parallel rails 21 arranged at opposite sides of a delivery pipe 22. When the assembly nears the tank bottom, oppositely-projecting coaxial pivots 23 on a flange 24 of the pump discharge engage forked support means 26 and the claws 19 run clear of the ends of the guide rails 21. Thus the assembly is allowed to rotate about the pivots 23 to the horizontal position shown wherein the discharge flange 24 engages the bottom of the delivery pipe 22. In a modification the pump discharge may be connected to a delivery hose or the like movable with the pump assembly. In each of two alternative embodiments the guide means 19, 21 are omitted, and the pivots and the suspension point of the pump assembly are so arranged that the weight of the pump assembly, during the hoisting and lowering thereof, causes the pivots to run against vertical or inclined guide cables or rails extending to the tank bottom. One of these embodiments, Fig. 6 (not shown), has rollers on the pivots which engage stops at the bottom of the guide rails and thereby enable the pump assembly to pivot to a substantially horizontal position. The pivots of the other embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), locate forked members at the bottom of the tank, one of which is connected with the tank delivery pipe and receives a tubular pivot serving as the pump discharge pipe, the latter being forced into sealing engagement with the tank delivery pipe by cam means during the pivoting of the pump assembly to its horizontal position.
