1,040,248. Typewriters &c. W. D. CLINTON, D. R. FORRY, J, J, GRIMM, and R. W. JONES. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 33516/64. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B5] Labels, comprising a base tape carrying printed matter and having on one side an adhesive coating protected by a strippable layer and on the other a transparent tape secured by a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating, are made by printing the base strip, e.g. by use of a typewriter, adhesively securing the transparent tape thereon, cutting or scoring all layers other than the strippable layer, and removing the latter. The base tape is preferably of opaque polyvinyl fluoride, the transparent tape of " acetate," and the strippable tape of paper. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises, Fig. 1, a frame 13 of parallel bars, mountable at 19 on the carriage 21 of a typewriter, and having extensions 15, 17 slotted to hold reels 69, 31, of transparent and base tape respectively. The web 27 of base tape is led over rollers and around the platen roller 35 of the typewriter, and the transparent web 67 is led around a roller 45 pressed into contact with roller 35 by a lever 57 which, when depressed, presses by a cam 55 a spring 49 bearing against a pair of links 39 carrying the roller. The required items platen roller 117 by a spring 123 and carrying teeth meshing with those of the platen roller. The combined tapes may be severed by a slotted knife 147 co-operating with an anvil plate 153 and moved forward by bar 149 connected to an operating rod 151, but preferably, where a number of successive matters are typed on the tape (e.g. reference numbers to be adhesively secured to the backs of library books), cutting each label is effected by a scoring knife 163, moved laterally on guide rods 159 and by a handle 171, and so adjusted by a screw 167 as to cut all layers except the strippable layer. On completion of a series the laminated tape may then be severed and the cover strip peeled from the individual labels. To give warning when matter typed appears at the cutting point a bell 181, set by depressing a lever 191, is made to ring after the corresponding degree of rotation of the roller 117.
