Abstract
Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1040180/C2/1> in which R is an alkyl group which contains 3-6 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group which contains at most 2 carbon atoms, and in particular the compounds wherein R is methoxy, n-butyl, isobutyl, isopropyl and n-hexyl are produced by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1040180/C2/2> in which Hal is halogen and the groups Z are the same and each represents an aliphatic or araliphatic ether or ester group which is convertible into a hydroxy group is subjected to an amide reaction with ammonia or a salt thereof, and thereafter any ether or ester group directly attached to the benzene nucleus is converted into the corresponding phenolic hydroxy group by hydrogenolysis or hydrolysis. The products exhibit an inhibiting action on certain enzymes which decompose adrenaline and may be used orally or cutaneously in association with a pharmaceutical carrier, for example a tablet, powder, pill, syrup or elixir. In the examples 3,4 - dibenzyloxy - alpha - methoxy - phenylacetyl chloride is used as a starting material.
