Abstract

1,039,666. Door operating appliances. E. POLLARD & CO. Ltd. June 28, 1965 [July 14, 1964], No. 28926/64. Heading E2M. An up-and-over door having a lever on the door connected to a unit reciprocated by an electric motor to move the door to its open or closed position has a coupling between the lever and the unit which is automatically released if the door movement is impeded. The unit comprises a cage 11 having rollers 12 engaging a track 13 and reciprocated by chains 15 connected to the electric motor drive. The chains are connected to a rod 14 carrying a post 16 positioned centrally of the cage by springs 17, 17a. Mounted on a bracket 18 secured to the post 16 are two abutment members 22, 23 between which is located a ball head 10 extending from a lever 8 attached to the door. When the motor is energized the chains 15 move the cage and one abutment member engages and moves the ball 10 and lever 8 to open or close the door. If the door movement is impeded, continued movement of the chains moves the cage and compresses one of the springs 17, 17a until the abutment (22 or 23) which is in contact with the ball 10 is able to pivot through a slot 31 (or 31a) whereby the ball and lever 8 are disconnected from the drive motor (Fig. 4, not shown). The abutments are spring urged to the positions shown in Fig. 3 so that the lever 8 is automatically recoupled during the next reciprocating stroke of the cage. Locking means is connected to the door operating mechanism so that initial movement of the mechanism releases the latches. Similarly, the final movement of the mechanism on closing the doors re-inserts the latches. The rollers 12 may be replaced by nylon shoes. The ball 10 may be guided in a separate channelshaped guideway to prevent it dropping downwardly when uncoupled.
