Abstract

1,039,652. Cigarette-making machines. J. T.WATSON, and MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. May 9, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No. 18014/62. Heading A2C. A heating device is provided in a continuous rod cigarette-making machine to seal the overlapping paper edges between which adhesive has been applied and which from the seam of the cigarette rod, the heating device comprising a member having a substantially smooth surface arranged to bear lengthwise on the seam of the cigarette rod, and heating means arranged to heat the member so that there is a temperature gradient along the surface, the temperature being greatest at that end of the surface which first contacts the rod. The heating member 3 (Fig. 3) has a rod contacting surface 4 and an inclined bore 28 in which is located a heating cartridge 30. A thermostat 31 is also embedded in the member 3. The inclination of the cartridge 30 ensures that the surface 4 is hottest at the end 29 which first contacts the cigarette rod 1. The member 3 is mounted on a cover 6 and support 7, a cover 9 being provided. Connected to the support 7 are lugs 10, 11 to which are pivoted links 12, 13 by means of shafts 14, 15. The links 12, 13 are pivoted by shafts 16, 18 to a fixed part 17 and further links 19 respectively. The link 19 is normally held in the position shown by a spring biased latch 22. To remove the heating member 3 from the rod 1 the member is raised by handle 27 so that the parallel links 12, 13 pivovt about the shafts 16, 18. To inspect the member 3, the link 19 is released from the latch 22 so that the assembly may be rotated clockwise about the shaft 16.
