Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A power transmission belt comprises a helically wound reinforcement 22, embedded in body 23, of rubber or thermosetting resin, having cog-like portions 26. Good bonding between the reinforcements and the body material is ensured by locating the reinforcement on a grooved mandrel surrounded by a mould, evacuating the moulding space and then introducing the material under superatmospheric or atmospheric pressure. The position and angle of the reinforcement may be varied by altering the pitch of the helix wound upon the mandrel, so that the strength characteristics of the belts may be controlled. In an alternative embodiment overlapping sheets 31, 32 are used as reinforcement. V-belts may be made by using a mould having internal grooves as in Fig. 4, not shown. Metal wire may be used as the reinforcement.
