Abstract

A chain saw cutter tooth comprises a flat body 21, Figs. 3 and 5, adapted to fit into and form part of a saw chain, a shank 35 integral with the body and inclined generally outwardly and laterally from the body, a toe portion 38 integrally connected to an outer edge of the shank and extending transversely across the plane of the body and terminating in an edge 39, a rib 42 formed at the juncture of the toe portion of the shank and extending longitudinally of the body, said rib in cross-section projecting laterally from the shank farther than any other portion of the tooth to form a longitudinal air passage 44 beneath the rib and having an edge 49 facing towards the body and extending abruptly inwards towards the shank, an undercut transverse cutting edge 50 on a forward edge of the toe portion, and a side cutting edge 56 along the forward edge of the rib. The body 21 is formed with holes 22, 23 by which it can be joined by rivets to side links in turn connected to other cutter teeth of left- and right-hand. The forward part of the body is provided with a depth gauge 32 in front of the shank 35 which projects laterally outwards from the body and is integral with the toe portion 38. The rib 42 is formed at the juncture of the shank and toe portion and has an outer curved surface 47 which terminates at a clear line 49 with the shank 35. The forward end of the toe portion is formed with the transverse cutting edge 50 and the rib 42 has the side cutting edge 56 which extends to approximately the upper edge of the shank 35. In use, the rib 42 provides a small area of tooth to rub on the side wall of a kerf 68 and the space 44 below the rib provides a passage for air which cools the tooth. The line 49 also serves as an indication to an operator sharpening the tooth where filing to produce the side cutting surface 56 should be stopped. In an alternative embodiment, the rib 77, Fig. 9, has a flat outer surface 85 which curves sharply in at 81 to form an edge of the rib at shank 35.
