Abstract

1,037,834. Automatic change-over of faulty circuits. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. March 6, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 9244/63. Headings H3W and H4R. An electronic system includes at least two interchangeable similar components arranged for alternative operation in the system the operative one of which is continuously monitored by feeding its output signal through a network having a transfer function which is an inverse of the transfer function of the component itself, and comparing the output of this network with the input to the component, and if these signals are not similar a switching circuit disconnects the faulty unit and connects the alternative unit. Fig. 2 shows a system in which units K3 and K4 are included in a signal path and unit K5 is a spare unit which may be connected in place of one of the units K3 and K4 if one of these should develop a fault. Each of the units has a comparison unit MA1, MA2, or MA3, associated with it which compares the input signal to the unit K3 &c. with the output from that unit after it has been modified by the inverse transfer network. If the comparison determines a difference an output is fed to a logic circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), which energizes the appropriate switching networks FF1, FF2, and FF3, to bias the diodes D1 to D10 appropriately to disconnect the faulty unit from the signal circuit and substitute the spare unit K5 in its place. The spare unit may also be continuously monitored by a test signal applied to its input and the logic circuit may have alarm circuits to indicate which of the units have developed faults.
