Abstract

1,037,600. Helically-wound tubes. SONOCO PRODUCTS CO. July 9, 1965, No. 29184/65. Heading F2P. A helically-wound multi-ply paper tube for forming the winding core of sheet material and carpets comprises a plurality of paper strips helically wound in overlapping relationship with adhesive therebetween at a helix angle in the range between 15 degrees to 27 degrees, each of said strips having the component fibres extending in the lengthwise direction of the strip. Paper strips 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29, each having their fibres extending in the direction of arrows I, are helically wound on a mandrel 12, the formed tube being rotatably advanced by a looped belt driven through pulleys 14 and 16. The pulleys are adjustably spaced on threaded shafts 19 and 20 and are mounted on an angularly adjustable frame 17. The inner strip 23 is brought in on one side of the mandrel and is lubricated as it passes through a lubricator 31. Intermediate strips 24, 25, 26 and 27 and outer strip 29 pass through adhesive applicators 32 and 36 respectively from the other side of the mandrel, excepting strip 28 which passes dry to the mandrel through guide rollers 34. Each strip is wound at a helix angle in the range between 15 degrees to 27 degrees, and preferably, in the range between 17 degrees to 22 degrees, thereby producing a helically-wound paper tube having a high beam and crush strength. Rollers 37 serve a two-fold purpose of supporting the mandrel and compressing the wound strips.
