Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a linear or branched polyamide containing primary or secondary amino groups, and having an amine number of less than 60, in intimate admixture with a blocked di- or polyisocyanate, the melting point of the polyamide being below the activation temperature of the blocked di- or polyisocyanate, and the blocked di- or polyisocyanate being present in an amount of 5 to 25% by weight of the total composition. Suitable polyamides are those made from dicarboxylic acids and diprimary amines containing one or more secondary groups in the chain or from diprimary amines which may contain secondary amino groups and polymerized unsaturated fatty acids. Suitable blocking agents are phenols and alcohols and also b -ketonic compounds. Blocked isocyanatos specified are phenol blocked 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and a phenol blocked prepolymer derived from tolylene diisocyanate and trimethylol propane. In Example (1) phenol blocked 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate was added to a polyamide derived from ethylene diamine and the methyl ester of polymerized unsaturated fatty acid (dimerginic acid) to form a composition which was stable on storage. The compositions may be heated above the activation temperature of the blocked isocyanate so that the adhesive cures in situ.
