Abstract
1,036,688. Attaching connectors to conductors; crimping. AMP Inc. May 31, 1965 [June 22, 1964], No. 23001/65. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division H2] Wires 6 are attached to a leaf spring 8 which may be used to bias a carbon brush in a dynamo-electric machine by a ferrule which is crimped in axially spaced regions 50, 22, 24, with adjacent regions being deformed in opposite directions. The ferrule, which is originally rectangular is deformed at the edges, downwardly at 50 and upwardly at 22, 24 so that the ferrule grips the edges of the leaf spring 8. The crimping is performed by a pair of dies 10, 12 which are mounted on a crimping head H which is operated by a toggle mechanism. The dies are carried by pins 33, 38 which run in slots 30, 40, and have guide posts 34, 36 so that the dies close along a rectilinear path. The lower die 12 has crimping members 20 and the upper die 10 has similar crimping members which are offset from the lower crimping members. A block 42 on the upper die 10 applies pressure to the upper surface of the ferrule. The ferrule is positioned against a block 16 on the lower die 12 and the leaf spring is positioned against a plate 18.
