Abstract
1,036,528. Linkages. HOOVER BALL & BEARING CO. Dec. 2, 1964 [May 13, 1964], No. 49066/64. Heading F2R. [Also in Division E1] A push-button assembly 10 to operate the flushing valve of a cistern 12 comprises a bush 20 to mount it in a wall opening 14, a plunger axially reciprocably slidable in the bush 20, relative to which a lever 16 operating a valve at one end is pivotally mounted on a bearing 38, axially parallel to the plunger axis and generally perpendicular to the lever's longitudinal axis, a bell crank lever 46 pivotally connected at 50 by one arm 48 relative to the bush 20 on an axis generally parallel to the said longitudinal axis, the other arm 51 extending into the path of axial movement of the plunger, and having an opening 56 at its fulcrum through which the lever 16 extends and is supported loosely so that when the arm 51 is moved inward, the lever 16 is moved vertically upward. The bush 20 slidably receives a pushbutton head 30 on the plunger and is externally threaded to be engaged by a locking nut 26 made to bear internally against the cistern 12. The plunger is urged axially away from the bell crank lever 46 by a compression spring acting between the bush 20 and the head 30. The bush 20 has a collar 22 to carry the pivot for the lever 16 and the bell crank lever 46, a screw 24 on the collar 22 engaging in a slot 36 in the plunger to limit its axial movement in one direction. The opening 56 in the bell crank lever 46 has a substantially larger crosssectional area than the lever 16, slidably supported on the lower part thereof, which has a configuration to produce a continuous force for the upward movement of the lever 16 on plunger inward movement. The plunger and the bell crank lever 46 have engaging surfaces 58, 54 normally diverging upward from one another, so that when the plunger is initially pushed, the lower edge thereof will engage the surface of the arm 51 at a certain distance from the pivot at 50 and, after the plunger has advanced to some extent, its upper edge will engage and pivotally move the bell crank lever 46. Thus (1) a maximum force acts upward on the lever 16 and a relatively low rate of valve upward movement occurs followed by (2) a reduced force on the lever with a correspondingly increased rate of valve movement.
