Abstract
<PICT:1036315/C4-C5/1> In a closed, tubular retort 10, which may be inclined or horizontal, and which has a rotary conveyer 23 for continuously traversing material to be carbonized through the retort, mechanism 11a for feeding the material to the retort and mechanism 12 for discharging it therefrom are synchronized at a required speed ratio. The apparatus operates as follows: The material to be carbonized, e.g. fine coal, is fed by a rotor in a part 11a to the shell 10 and is conveyed therethrough to a discharge rotor in a part 12, both rotors being driven from the shaft 22. Distillation gases are led off at 28 and may be delivered, after treatment, at 20 to the burner 20a for burning with air. Flue gases leave by passages 16, 17, 21. Producer gas may replace the distillation gases wholly or in part. Alternatively or in addition, heating of the charge in the shell 10 may be by injecting superheated steam into the shell. Two retorts may be located side-by-side, the outlets 28 leading to a common conduit 29. In this case, the flue gases are passed downwardly from the furnace chamber 14 (see Fig. 2, not shown). The char from the outlet feeder 13 may pass directly to a briquetting plant.
