Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5, B6, E1 and G1] A flexible or rigid facing unit for walls, partitions, counter-tops, or on floors as a substitute for linoleum, comprises glazed ceramic pieces of regular or irregular shape bonded together edge to edge using described adhesives 5 so that the front and back surfaces of the ceramic pieces remain exposed. The pieces may be transparent, translucent, or opaque, and may each be formed with spacers 17 to maintain the pieces apart. The pieces may be apertured. The adhesive may be fibre reinforced, electrically conductive, and transparent to light. The unit when flexible may be stored in rolls and the unit may comprise only a single row of ceramic pieces. The unit is made by applying the adhesive between the ceramic pieces while they are held to a base by adhesive tape 61, 63, 65, (Fig. 6, not shown) with the gaps between peripheral pieces also closed with adhesive tape 51, 53 (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively the unit is made by pouring the adhesive into gaps between the pieces while they are held in an open frame, Fig. 7 (not shown). The unit may also be made by the method described in Specification 1,035,772.
