Abstract

1, 035, 542. Centrifugal separators. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. March 23,1965 [April 2,1964],No. 13694/64. Heading B2P. The rotor of a centrifugal separator for extracting solid matter from a fluid, e.g. oil, or for separating two liquids of different specific gravities, e.g. water and fuel oil, comprises two cup-like elements 9 and 10,11, Fig. 1, secured to each other along their edges with their concave surfaces facing each other, the element 10,11 being formed with outwardly projecting portions 15,16 provided with nozzle apertures 15A, 16A through which cleaned fluid is discharged with a tangential component to drive the rotor. The rotor is made of tin plate pressings and the lower cup-like element is made of two walls 10,11 defining between them a chamber 12 into which the cleaned fluid is dis- . charged from the interior of the rotor via an annular passage 13. The rotor is mounted within a two-part casing 1, 2 and is supported by means of bearings 17,18 on a fixed spindle 6 which is provided with an axial passage 7, which may extend near to the top of the rotor, and radial ports 8 for fluid to be cleaned which enters the casing through a passage 4. The cleaned fluid is discharged through a passage 5. The upper part of the casing is maintained in position by a nut 6A. Removal of the nut allows the part 1 to be detached and the rotor to be disposed of and replaced when an appropriate quantity of contaminant has been separated. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the rotor is installed in the crankcase of an I.C. engine for purifying the oil. The rotor is rotatably supported at its lower end on a substantially hollow spindle 20 secured to a plate 21 forming part of the engine oil sump. The upper end of the rotor is rotatably supported on a ball 23 engaging a part-spherical surface in a cover plate 26 normally closing an aperture in the upper wall 27 of the crankcase. In another form of oil separator, Fig. 3 (not shown), the rotor is rotatably mounted at its lower end on a substantially hollow spindle fixed to the lower part 29 of a casing secured to the part of a wall 27 of an engine crankcase surrounding a sump drainage outlet, the upper end of the rotor being rotatably supported on a ball 34 engaging a part-spherical surface in the detachable upper part 28 of the casing. The bore 32 of the spindle receives oil via a passage 31 in the part 29 which communicates with an oil delivery pipe 32.
