Abstract
1,035,439. Welding by pressure; hammering. TAYLOR WINFIELD CORPORATION. Aug. 22, 1964, No. 34447/64. Headings B3H and B3R. In the electric resistance welding of metal sheet or strip 13, 14, Fig. 3 (not shown), the edge portions to be joined are first cold-worked to reduce their average thickness and form welding surfaces 18 which are overlapped and then welded by electrodes 15, Fig. 7 (not shown). In one embodiment, two metal strips 13, 14 to be joined endwise are gripped respectively by a fixed clamp 10 and a movable clamp 11 of a welding machine. The clamp 11 is then titled and moved inwardly to overlap the ends of the strips, Fig. 2 (not shown) and these ends are then cold peened by hammers 16 to form the inclined surfaces 18. Strip 14 is then withdrawn slightly to provide small recesses 19, Fig 4 (not shown), at each sides of the joint for receiving excess metal during welding. This is effected by roller electrodes 15 and the joint is then flattened by the peening hammers 16, Fig 7 (not shown), if necessary with additional heat. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown) the cold working is performed by planishing rolls which also flatten the welded joint. The cold-working of the edges may be performed outside the welding machine by separate dies 21-24, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown). Bar type electrodes may be used instead of rollers. The invention is of particular use in joining the ends of strip for use in continuous processes. It may also be used for edge welding sheet metal components of cabinets.
