Record/playback 29 and rewind 35 buttons (Fig. 5, not shown) each act to remove a brakepad 14 from a take-up reel-carrier b, Fig. 2, the pad 14 being mounted on a rocker 13 pivoted at 11 and normally urged into engagement by a helical spring 17, Fig. 4, wound around the pivot rod 11, the brake retraction movement occurring in a plane transverse to the plane of the feed c and take-up b reel-carriers. A motor 22, Fig. 3, is normally urged by a spring 28 such that its shaft 24 drivingly engages the carrier b to drive the tape for record/ playback and a collar 25 on the motor shaft may be engaged with the carrier c for (faster) rewind by depressing button 35. Depression of either of the latchable buttons 29, 35 energizes the motor to run in the required direction (Fig. 7, not shown) and a stop button S releases either of the buttons 29, 35 and the spring 17 reapplies the brake. To prevent tape spillage and provide backtension during record/playback, a roller d, Fig. 2, is urged by a spring 8 against the feed-spool carrier c.
