Abstract
1,035,183. Disc brakes; friction clutches. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. and FERODO Ltd. July 26, 1962 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 28146/61. Headings F2C and F2E. A friction brake or clutch comprises a rotatable disc 23 which is mounted between friction pads 24 each secured to a backing plate 24, two pistons 30, one for each pad for forcing via pressure transmission means 26 the respective pads axially into frictional engagement with the disc during rotation of the latter, the pressure transmission means having a sufficiently low coefficient of sliding or rolling friction with the backing plates 24 (or members secured thereto) to permit relative circumferential movement between the pistons and the backing plates during application of the brake or clutch, whereby the frictional forces set up within the brake or clutch during the said frictional engagement lie substantially completely in the planes of the two opposite surfaces of the disc to reduce brake " squeaks " and " squeals ". As shown, balls 26 are disposed between the pistons 30 and backing plates 25 and are held on the longitudinal axis of the pistons by castellated springs 27. In a modification the balls are replaced by studs having rounded ends. In another embodiment the pistons carry pads of polytetrafluoroethylene having a low coefficient of friction in the unlubricated state and which bear against the backing plates. In a still further embodiment members of stepped form are secured to the pistons and backing plates and are inclined, e.g. at an angle of 11 degrees. The stepped surfaces may be self-lubricating or supplied with a lubricant.
