Abstract

A stabilized aqueous formaldehyde solution is prepared by forming a solution containing formaldehyde and polyuret so that there are 4 to 10 moles of formaldehyde per mole of polyuret, and maintaining the solution at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. for at least one hour. The term "polyuret" denotes biuret or triuret or a mixture of these. The process may be used for absorbing formaldehyde from formaldehyde synthesis gases preferably in more than one stage. The stabilized formaldehyde solution may be reacted with ammonia to give hexamethylene tetramine and urea.
