Abstract
1,035,078. Preparation and separation of radioisotopes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 3, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 23778/65. Headings G6P and G6R. A substance is made radioactive by subjecting to a neutron flux a mixture of the substance with an additive, and separating the two components by a method dependent on a chemical or physical difference between the substance and the additive. Preferably, the substance and the additive are mixed in powder form and the mean diameter of the particles of the powdered substance is less than the mean free path of neutrons within the substance. The powdered mixture is preferably compressed into pellets before irradiation. A mixture of powdered europium oxide and alkali metal carbonate is pelletted, irradiated in a nuclear reactor, and separated by washing out the alkali metal carbonate with water. Alternatively, a sintered mass of silica is impregnated with a solution of europium chloride, dried, irradiated, and then the europium chloride is extracted with dilute hydrochloric acid and europium precipitated as oxalate. In another embodiment, activated iridium is made by compacting a powdered mixture of iridium and carbon, irradiating, and calcining to remove the carbon. The method may also be used to irradiate gold, thallium, or substances enriched in the isotopes Eu151. Ir191, or Re185.
