Abstract
1,034,819. Automatic control of rotary shears. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 30, 1963 [Sept.11, 1962], No. 34697/62. Heading G3R. In a control system for a motor driving the blades of a flying shear, the voltage applied to terminal 39 indicates the length of strip to be cut off, the voltage applied to terminal 41 indicating the periphery of the circle swept by the shear-blades. A signal applied through terminal 49 holds integrating de - vices 33, 37, at zero until a desired starting-point relative to the strip is reached. Tachometer generators 15, 17, provide signals representing the shearspeed and strip-speed respectively, the output of device 37 representing the distance travelled by the strip, and that of the device 33 indicating the distance travelled by the shear blades. A summing device 43 receives inputs from the terminal 39 and the device 37. In summing device 45, the algebraical sum of the inputs to device 43 is added to the input from terminal 41 and the output from device 33. The output from device 45 thus represents the sum of the shear circle periphery and the time integral of the strip speed, less the sum of the desired length and the time integral of the shear speed, the integrals being taken from a datum point given by the making of the previous cut. The output of device 45 is fed to regulator 21 for controlling the speed of motor 13 which drives the blades, thereby enabling the blades to cut off the desired length of material. Potentiometers 14, 36, may be adjusted to vary the ratio between the shear-speed and strip-speed at the moment of contact. In another arrangement, the shears are driven by motor 113 coupled to pulse tachometer 115, a pulse tachmometer 117 being driven by the strip through gear 120. Pulses from the tachometers are fed to counter 129 connected to decoder 133 associated with regulator 137. Terminals 149, 151, serve for the application to the counter of setting signals representing respectively the predetermined length of strip and the periphery of the circle swept by the shear blades.
