Abstract

1,034,507. Regulating. T. HINDMARCH. Sept. 15, 1964 [Sept. 30, 1963], No. 38330/63. Heading FIB. [Also in Division B7] A marine propulsion system comprises an engine, a change direction gear, a mechanism for controlling the change direction gear and the power output of the engine (as shown, cams 30, 29 respectively operating bell cranks 33, 34 leading to the gear and to the engine control), and manually operated lever movable from a position giving idling condition of the engine and neutral condition of the gear in either of two directions corresponding to ahead and astern. The cams 30, 29 are so designed that initial movement from the neutral position shown moves only the crank 33 to engage the gear in the appropriate sense, and on further movement the cam 29 acts to increase the engine power. The manually operated lever moves a rod 2 connected to a rod 7 through a spring biased lost motion connection 6 which allows movement of the rod 7 to lag behind movement of the rod 2. A peg 60 extends from the rod 7 and movement of the rod from one side of the neutral position to the other is prevented by a plunger 8 in the path of the peg. The plunger 8 is operated by a cam 11 through a spring 9 and connected to a dashpot 15 having a spring acting to release the latch, the arrangement being such that the displacement of the dashpot and therefore the time during which the rod 7 is held in the neutral position depends on the position of the cam 11 prior to the movement to the neutral position, and hence to the engine power before such movement. On release of the plunger 8 the movement of the rod is controlled by a variable rate dashpot 40, which has non-return valves 50, 51 to allow a more rapid return to the neutral position and is transmitted through a servomotor 20, 25 and rack and pinion 27, 28 to the cams 11, 29, 30. The cams 29, 30 may be operated directly by a wheel 35, axial movement of which brings it into driving engagement with the cam 29 and disconnects a dog clutch 56.
