Abstract

1,034,135. Artificial horizons. FERRANTI Ltd. May 21, 1965 [May 23, 1964], No. 21412/64. Heading B7W. [Also in Division G1] An artificial horizon having a face of partspherical shape divided into to differentlycoloured areas carries a further part-spherical plate in front of the face plate and divided into differently-coloured areas corresponding to those colours on the face plate, whereby a full image of sky is provided with a movable surface of limited dimensions. The Figure is a side elevation wherein a rotor casing 10 encloses a gyro (not shown) rotating about axis 11, the casing being supported for free movement about a horizontal pitch axis 13 within a gimbal ring 14 in turn supported within an aircraft on a roll axis 16. A part-spherical sky or face plate 17 is mounted on ring 14 so as to move with it about roll axis 16, the plate being divided into two areas of differing colours. A plate 18, of part spherical shape is mounted in front of plate 17 by a pivoted arm 19 which rocks about a pivot parallel to but displaced from axis 13, plate 18 also being divided into two areas of differing colours by a horizontal line. The arm 19 carries a tail 21 formed with a slot extending into an enlarged opening which is engaged by a pin 23 on a plate 22 carried by casing 10 whereby pitching movement of casing 10 is translated into movement in the opposite sense of plate 18, such movement being limited by stops 27, movement of the gyro outside these limits being permitted by movement of pin 23 within the enlarged portion of the enlarged opening in tail 21.
