Ion exchange takes place in zone 1 of vessel with elution or regeneration in zone 2 with recycling of resin. The two treatment liquids injected at 25 and 11 are prevented from too much mixing by varying the rate of supply and withdrawal so as to cause a small flow of liquid from the elution zone to the absorption zone. The situation of the zones may be reversed.
