Abstract

103,376. Fiske, W. G. March 2, 1916. Pulp, preparation of.-In disintegrating waste paper, wood pulp, &c, a mixture of the material with water or other liquid, adapted to promote disintegration and to extract any substance it is desired to remove, is delivered by a pipe 15 to one or more channels 25 in a drum 11, which is mounted on rollers 17, 18 and rotated by a worm 22 engaging a circumferential ring 23. The channels 25 are formed by one or more helical flanges 24 and are provided with cross-gates in the form of baffles, barriers, or strainers of the form shown. These impede the flow of the material through the drum and cause a tumbling movement. Those inclined to the axis of the drum in the direction shown, and reaching to the top of the flanges, put back any lumps of material into a previous convolution and so tend to detain masses of material in the apparatus until thoroughly disintegrated. The gates may be straight or curved, as shown in Fig. 5, and may be of different depths. Water may be supplied within the drum by a pipe 44. The pitch and depth of the helical flange or flanges 24 may be varied. Tho material delivered at the flared end 11, may be screened to effect final separation of lumps, which may be returned automatically to the shoot 16. According to the Provisional Specification, rearwardly inclined deflectors may be mounted within the drum clear of the helical flange, to prevent material from falling into a convolution of the helical flange in advance of that from which it has fallen.
