Abstract

1,033,729. Selective printing; carbon and like transfer-paper mechanism. ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd. March 19, 1964 [March 27, 1963], No. 12107/63. Addition to 956,074. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; type-wheel actions; magnetic ink impressions; index setting arrangements; alignment for impression.-A selective pointer for printing information in magnetic ink on cheques comprises two rotatable drums 2, 3, Fig. 1, arranged for being driven at the same peripheral speed, one of the drums 3, Fig. 9, carrying one or more settable typewheels 25 having a plurality of type characters 27, the other drum 2 having a plurality of pressure members 6 provided with elastomeric facings 7, the axes of rotation 9 and 8, respectively, of the drums being spaced to provide a gap 40, whereby the cheque and a carbon transfer web can pass through the gap, cam means 31, 43 being provided for changing the spacing of the axes so as to close the gap 40 when the type-wheels 25 face a pressure member 6 to effect impression. In operation on insertion of a cheque into the printer appropriate ones of the type-wheels 25 are set by a removable toothed wheel connected to the setting mechanism (not shown) and each type-wheel has secured thereto a toothed wheel 28 engaged by a detent spring 29 for correctly registering the wheels as they are set. To align the type-wheels for impression pawls 82 carried on a pivot bar 81 are engaged by the circumference of a fixed cam-shaft 16 and moved into engagement with the toothed wheel 28 to lock the type-wheels 25. The type drum 3 and the pressure drum 2, Fig. 1, have stub formations 17 and 8, respectively, carrying gears 34 and 37, both having a peripheral portion 41, Fig. 4, missing to effect the change of interaxial spacing during impression and the drums are driven synchronously by a gear 39 meshing with a gear 33 on the stub formation 17. The stub formation 17 carries also a cam 31, Fig. 3, having a depression 42 which cooperates with a follower 43 on a bridge 44 secured to a slidable housing 11 in which the pressure drum 2 is mounted. The housing is acted upon by a compression spring 45 which urges the housing 11 and thus the pressure drum 2 into impression engagement with the type drum 3, the impression taking place when the tooth-free portions 41 are aligned to allow the type wheels 25 and pressure bar 6 to cooperate. To ensure non-slip drive of the type drum and pressure drum when the gears 34 and 37 are out of mesh a Geneva mechanism is provided comprising a slotted member 38 mounted on the stub 8 and a pin-carrying member 35 on the stub 17, a pin 36 on the member 35 being in angular register with the beginning of the tooth-free portions 41 and engaging in a slot 51 aligned radially. Paper and matrix carriages and supports.- The pressure drum 2 comprises two end plates 4 and 5, Fig. 1, between which extend four metal pressure bars 6, Fig. 9, having a facing 7 of elastomeric material finish to the diameter of the cylinder of rotation. In another embodiment, in Fig. 10, the pressure bars 6 are replaced by a pressure pad 62 of chrome-nickel steel having the same peripheral curvature as a shell 61, the pad being supported by plates 63 extending axially through the shell interior. The plates 63 terminate in a bridge member 64 acted upon by a V-shaped leaf spring urging the pad 62 to project above the surface of the shell 61. Abutments 66 co-operate with abutments 67 on the supporting plates 63 to limit the projection position of the pad 62 when acted upon by the type drum 3 during impression. In a further modification the pressure bars 6 are replaced by pressure bars 71, Fig. 11, having a rigid facing 72 co-operating with a resilient sheet of synthetic plastic material 76 held in extendsd arched form by tongues 74 on spring members 73. Non-selectable printing.-In addition to the type-wheels 25, the type drum 3 may carry fixed printing slugs 83 (Fig. 2, not shown). Printing on two or more sets of sheets, cheques, continuous webs &c.-More than one pressure drum may be provided to co-operate with the same type drum to enable printing of the cheque and one or more tally strips, webs or other documents at the same type setting and during the same cycle of rotation of the type drum. Conversely, a plurality of type drums may be arranged for co-operation with a single pressure drum. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-A paper transfer web 144 (Fig. 5, not shown) having a pressure transferable coating of magnetic ink extends through the gap 40 between the type and pressure drums 2, 3, respectively, Fig. 1, the web being taken from a supply roll 145, Fig. 3, guided over rollers 150 and taken up on a takeup spool 46. A known friction brake (not shown) may act against the supply roll to prevent overspill of the web. The take-up spool is held on a removable spindle 47 provided with a friction wheel 49 positioned for engagement by a lobe 150 of a cam 32 mounted on the stub formation 17, whereby the web is fed a distance equal to the height of the type face on the type wheels 25 for each revolution of the type drum 3. When use is made of transfer webs intended for a single use only a discharge shoot or container for receiving the used up web may be provided.
