Abstract
1,033,625. Attenuating networks. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS Ltd. Jan. 4, 1965 [June 3, 1964], No. 22985/64. Heading H3U. An attentuating network comprises at least two sections in cascade, each including a series resistance, a condenser in parallel with said resistance and two shunt condensers, one on each side of said resistance and one of which may be common with a shunt condenser of the next section; and a shunt resistance across the output end of the last of the sections, the elements in the network being dimensioned so as substantially to satisfy the following equations, namely:- where C1 is the value of each shunt condenser other than the one nearest the input end and the one nearest the output end of the network; C2 is the value of each condenser in parallel with a series resistance; Ct is the value of the shunt condenser nearest the output end of the network; Rr is the value of the rth series resistance counting from the input end of the network; N is the required total attenuation (in times) of the network and is equal to n<SP>r</SP>, where n is the attentuation of each section (including any effective loading); Rt is the value of the shunt resistance across the output end of the whole network; and R T is the total input resistance of the network. The network is particularly suitable for use with oscilloscopes and provides a high impedance and high attenuation ratio, the network being effective over a very wide frequency range and being substantially unaffected by the frequency. In a two-section embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2, having input terminals 1 and output terminals 2, R1 and R2 are two series resistances, C2 are the parallel-connected condensers and may be adjustable, C1 is the shunt condenser common to both sections, Co is the shunt condenser at the input end, Ct the shunt condenser at the output end and Rt the shunt resistance at the output end. S is an earthed electrostatic screen between the resistances R1 and R2. Since there are two sections, r = 2 and n = #N. A multiple section network is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown).
