A feed mechanism for a hay baler comprises packer fingers 10, 11 carried by a frame 15 which is reciprocated along a horizontal guideway 17, 18, 19 by means of a reciprocable sprung driving member 16 acting through an intermediate member 23, pivoted at 26 to crank 27, which is rotatable about a shaft 28, and at 25 to the frame 15. The frame is first forwarded until the crank is horizontal, whence further rotation of the crank pivots the carriage upwardly about rollers 20 (not marked), 21, mounted to the rear of the carriage, and retracts it along the guideway, to its original position for the commencement of the next cycle. During the retraction the fingers 10, 11 describe a part-elliptical path. The fingers are carried by a frame 13, 14, pivoted to the feed carriage, which is locked in the working position, against the action of a spring 37 by a shear bolt or the like so that when the fingers encounter any excessive resistance the bolt collapses and the fingers are automatically withdrawn. In an alternative embodiment (see Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the frame 15 is pivoted at 50 to a second carriage 47 which is slidable along guideway 17 and which is pivotable about rollers 49 so that upon return movement of frame 15 the frame 47 and their fingers 48 are raised as illustrated in Fig. 8 (not shown).
