Abstract
985,999. Reaper-binders. L. CASTOLDI. Aug. 11, 1961 [Aug. 12, 1960], No. 29089/61. Heading A1F. A reaper-binder comprises a motorised chassis 10 with a front cutter-bar 15 and a collecting and sheaving device 16 which includes at least one pair of toothed forks 50, 51 performing opposite oscillatory movements to engage the cut crop and compress it into a channel 11 there being binding and ejecting devices located in the channel and set into operation by a predetermined pressure of crop therein and caused to move thereafter in a predetermined phase-relationship with the movement of the forks. The forks are approximately L-shaped in plan and are oscillated by cranks 58, 59 driven continuously, the rear ends of the forks being mounted on swinging levers 54, 55. The crop builds up against a gate 63 which holds it. As the quantity increases a pivoted finger 71 is forced back and releases a bolt 75 which normally holds one end of a bell-crank lever 78 so that a roller 83 on its other end is out of engagement with a tooth 85 inside a continuously rotating hollow member 84. Engagement of the roller 83 and tooth 85 rotates a shaft 88, through links 80, 86, 87, to carry the knotting needle 65 across the channel where it engages a knotting device 66, of conventional construction. The needle, in its movement, contacts a bell-crank 105 linked to a latch 110, so that the gate 63 is opened after a certain travel of the needle; simultaneously an ejecting arm 94, which moves continously through a closed trajectory F, pushes the bound sheaf rearwardly out of the machine. Springs 73, 100 then return all the parts to their original positions. The various continuously-moving parts are driven by the motor 13 of the machine which also drives the cutter-bar through a crank 22 and bellcrank 45, 46.
