A well packer comprises a packing collar 13 having abutments and slidable on a mandrel 1, 10, a setting force transmitting cylinder 33 slidable over a piston 42 fixed to the mandrel and dividing the cylinder into chambers 45, 46, and ports 47, 48 venting the chambers to the interior of the mandrel and adapted to co-operate with a setting tool 50 to create differential pressures in the chambers to move the cylinder to exert a longitudinal setting force on the collar. When the packer is at the desired position in the casing 19 the tool is lowered into the packer, the tool having magnetic switches actuated by magnets, set in rings 8 fixed to the packer, to fire a charge to latch the tool to the mandrel and to open an outlet 52 leading from a chamber 56 containing fluid at a lower pressure than that of the well fluid in the bore of the mandrel. Packing 51 on the tool ensures that the pressure in the chamber 46 then falls below that in the chamber 45 which is connected to the bore of the mandrel by a port 48. The differential pressures in the chambers move the cylinder upwardly to set the collar and the slips 21, 31, the cylinder being held in its upper setting position by a one way fixing wedge 39. The packer is recovered by rotating the mandrel to undo threads 44, and then raising the mandrel. In a modification the invention is applied to a drillable packer, the tubing string being rotated to disconnect it from the packer prior to drilling out the packer.
