Abstract

1,032,834. Stamping. CINCINNATO MILLING MACHINE CO. Feb. 11, 1965, No. 6073/65. Heading B3Q. Apparatus for forming a workpiece 48 about a punch 28, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), comprises a flexible diaphragm 46 covering the end of a fluid-filled chamber 44 in a ram 30, hydraulic cylinder-and-piston units 32, 34, 36, 38 for lowering the ram to engage the diaphragm against the workpiece, which is supported on a ring 20, means for raising the pressure of the fluid in the chamber 44, a piston 24 for pressing the punch 28 into the workpiece, and means for producing a shock wave in the fluid in chamber 44 to press the workpiece into a pattern 114 on the punch. In the embodiment, the shock wave is produced by an electric arc between electrodes 106, 108 connected to a bank of capacitors 116. Valves 52, 88 control the supply of fluid from a pump 64 for raising and lowering the ram 30 and piston 24. A further valve 70 controls the supply of fluid from low, and high, pressure pumps 84, 71 to the chamber 44. The low-pressure supply serves only to maintain the chamber full of fluid during intervals between forming operations. The high pressure supply is also connected to a pressure-regulating valve 78, the spring 102 of which may be adjusted by a cam 98 if it is desired to raise the pressure progressively in chamber 44 during entry of the punch 28. Fluid displaced by entry of the punch passes through valve 78 to a reservoir 86. The valves 70, 52, 88 may be controlled by solenoids. The workpiece may be a flat disc or a preformed part.
