Abstract

1,032,777. Feeding magnetic tapes. DECCA Ltd. Nov. 25, 1964 [Dec. 23, 1963], No. 50636/63. Heading G5R. Magnetic tape feeding apparatus comprises a vacuum capstan 81 adapted to feed tape out of and into a removable cassette. The cassette slides into a locating channel 44 on the fixed part of the apparatus and is provided with locating apertures 37 and 38 engaged by spigots 47 and 48. The cassette may be locked in position by a latch operated by a lever 71, and a pair of microswitches 50 and 53 are operated on insertion of the cassette to indicate that the cassette is in place and that transducing may begin. A pair of guides 18 and 26 in the cassette are pressed by respective springs into grooves such as 60 so that the tape is accurately located with respect to the transducer head 49. The tape is pressed against the head by a spring-loaded guide 23 provided with a ferrite plate 23b to control the cross-talk during playback. A concave mirror 22 in the cassette co-operates with a lamp 68 and photo-cell 69 to detect a transparent or translucent end-oftape mark. Before leaving the cassette the tape passes over a vacuum tensioning block 14 supplied with low pressure through connections 56 and 57, and before re-entering the cassette the tape passes over a spring-loaded guide 33, which, when the cassette is not in use, presses the tape against rubber stops 92 on a cover-plate 90 to keep the tape sufficiently taut to engage the capstan when the cassette is replaced in the apparatus. A wedge 36 may be provided in the cassette to break the tape into small folds as it enters. The tape may be endless, or the cassette may be provided with a pair of spools or divided into two scramble bins. The cassette shown is provided with one bay for co-operating with one capstan, but two bays may be provided so that two capstans may be used. The fixed part of the apparatus may be provided with a plurality of coaxial capstans co-operating with a plurality of cassettes, or a single capstan may be provided with a plurality of control valves so that it may selectively drive a number of tapes. The capstan may be as described in Specification 1,032,778.
