Abstract
1,032,348. Brake adjusters. BENDIX CORPORATION. May 7, 1964 [May 15, 1963 (2)], No. 19064/64. Heading F2E. An automatic adjuster for a drum-brake comprising a cable 30 connected by a cage 32 to a lever 36 so as to cause the latter to rotate a serrated wheel 21 operating a screw-and-nut adjuster 16 for brake shoes 12, 14 is characterized by a resilient element 34 stretched between points 46 and 54 on the cage and which at 54 connects with the lever 36 as well so as to allow relative movement at that end between the cage and the lever. The cable 30 is hooked to a pin 22 fixed on the backing plate and passes around a guide 31 on the shoe 14. A spring 38, weaker than the spring 34, tends to rotate the lever 36 away from contact with the wheel 21. When the brake shoes are applied by the fluid motor 24 tension is induced in the cable 30 which causes the lever to rotate the wheel 21. Reaction from the shoes increases on the strut 16 until the screw 20 jams in the nut and turns no further and subsequent increase in tension is taken up by the spring 38. Figs. 3, 5 and 7 illustrate embodiments in which the invention is applied to other constructions of shoe-drum brake.
